Chronic and traumatic stress inhibit areas of the brain necessary for learning. Over 15.5 million children in the US experience factors directly linked with such toxic stress, including living in poverty and exposure to violence. In order to enable these kids to thrive in school, we must address stress within the structure of the school day. MindfulK12 -- an app and curriculum -- provides an easy way for teachers to build a norm of daily, 5-10 minute mindfulness and social-emotional learning activities that help students feel in control, reduce and manage stress, self-regulate emotions, and engage productively in the classroom.
